Anal and perineal hygiene

Catégorie(s):

The perineal area performs important bodily functions.

It therefore deserves the same respect and attention that is given to one’s face, hands and the rest of the body.

There are many contaminants that come into contact with the skin of the perineum:

  • fecal matter
  • regional secretions (including sweat)
  • menstrual fluid
  • vaginal secretions
  • urine loss
  • contact with clothing and sheets
  • use of irritating creams

The Western custom of using only toilet paper after defecation is not universally accepted. Many regions and cultures recommend moist cleaning of the perianal area after defecation.

Why is this? Because feces contains numerous chemical and biological substances. These pigments soak into the skin and can cause irritation. When this irritation causes itching, the ensuing scratching (often at night and therefore unconscious) creates micro-injuries and causes the penetration of bacteria and chemical substances. Inflammation (dermatitis) can then develop, sometimes with a superinfection of bacteria or fungi.

It is therefore advisable to properly cleanse following defecation. The easiest way to do this is to wait until after your morning bowel movement to take a shower.

Otherwise, you can use a damp cloth after using toilet paper.

Commercial products are also very useful. Be careful not to use scented wipes, as they may cause more irritation. Products available on the market include:

  • Incognito wipes
  • Tucks wipes

When irritation is significant, a good option is using a sitz bath (for no more than 5 to 10 minutes) followed by cleansing using unscented soap.

In the presence of an infection, it becomes necessary to temporarily add a multi-purpose cream (against bacteria and fungi) and sometimes a disinfectant soap (for a short time).

Once the inflammation is gone, skin care depends on the situation:

  • Those who sweat significantly should use a basic powder (wheat starch) or medicated powder (Zeasorb AF)
  • Those with sensitive skin can use zinc oxide (Zincofax, Ihle’s Paste) or CUTIBASE cream

To care for chronically dry or vulnerable skin, hemp butter is recommended
