Anal surgery post-operative wound care

Catégorie(s):

Properly caring for the anal wound is important, especially in the days following the procedure.

Although the wound must be gently cared for, cleaning should be done to remove any fecal particles that may have remained in the anal canal or outside the anus. Position a handheld shower head about 25 centimeters (twelve inches) away and allow a warm stream of water to flow for 30 to 60 seconds to ensure optimal cleaning. An ointment can then be applied to ensure disinfection, protection and lubrication.

In the first few days, a basic ointment such as Polysporin is useful. After a week, zinc oxide 25% (Ihle’s paste) can be used. In both cases, the ointment should be inserted well into the anal canal and the edges of the anus should be coated.

Keep in mind that an anal wound can take up to two months to heal, and the outward appearance is often irregular due to swelling in the area.
